About the Author

A week before Valentine’s Day one year, Mrs. Sandy Heitmeier Thompson and her second graders created Valentine’s Day cards for the men and women living at a nearby nursing home. On the morning of February 14, Mrs. Thompson, with the help of some parents, drove the kids to the facility. As they walked in, the group saw some of the elderly residents sitting at tables and playing cards. Down the hall, some were lying in beds and reading books. A few others were in wheelchairs. These golden-agers’ faces visibly brightened as the children approached to give them the Valentines. The kids asked how they were doing, and the older folks wound up sharing many stories with them. Mrs. Thompson remembers when one of the female seniors told a couple of the students that she was “no spring chicken.” Confused, the kids looked at their teacher and tried to figure out what that meant. Mrs. Thompson explained that it means someone was no longer young.
Mrs. Thompson was very proud of the polite and patient way her students interacted with the elderly ladies and gents at the nursing home. Mrs. Thompson also remembers the heartwarming moment when one child told an older gentleman that maybe his mom could bring him back so they could visit again. Later that day, back at school, the students were treated to cupcakes and punch, and then everyone exchanged Valentines and treats. There was a lot of laughter and happiness that day. Mrs. Thompson still remembers the many much-appreciated cards and candy hearts that her students gave her through the years. Valentine’s Day truly is a day to express a little extra love and kindness to all.
