The Case of Charles Dexter Ward was the second of H.P. Lovecraftís major tales to be set in his hometown of Providence, Rhode Island. Joseph Curwen, a scholar and a man of some importance, leaves Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 and settles in Providence, Rhode Island, where he builds a series of grand houses in the oldest section of the city.
Curwen is an object of curiosity to the people of Providence ñ even after decades he does not show signs of normal aging. He is known to be practicing alchemy, which also disturbs the good people of Providence. Curwen also spends time in the local graveyards which is considered peculiar. One day Curwen is visited by Dr. John Merritt, who is upset when he notices a passage in one of Curwenís books that has been heavily underscored ñ it concerns the use of salts from humans and animals to be used to resurrect the dead.
This book is annotated and includes a critical essay and biography about the life and times of H.P. Lovecraft is also included with this book.
