This history is organized by subject, rather than chronologically or by philosophical school, with sections on logic, epistemology, physics and metaphysics, ethics and politics. Written by specialists, it is intended to be a reference for any student of ancient philosophy. Greek and Latin are used sparingly and always translated in the main text.

The philosophy of the Greek and Roman worlds from the last days of Aristotle (d.322 BC) until 100 BC, as reconstructed from fragmentary evidence, has enjoyed a heyday of scholarly attention over the last two decades. This reference is written specialists, but not specialists (Greek and Latin are used sparingly and always translated in the main text). It is organized by theme rather than by chronology or philosophical school, thus making it easier to present the debate and dissension between the different schools which characterized the Hellenistic age. The introduction contains contributions on sources, chronology, and organization and structure of the philosophical schools. Subsequent sections, each with three to five essays, focus on logic and language, epistemology, physics and metaphysics, and ethics and politics. Algra is affiliated with the University of Utrecht; the three other editors are with the U. of Geneva, the U. of Utrecht, and the U. of Cambridge. Annotation c.
