About the Author

Sandra Boynton is a popular American cartoonist, author, songwriter, producer, and director. Since 1974, Boynton has created eighty-eight children’s books and seven general audience books, including six New York Times bestsellers. More than 90 million of her books have been sold, “mostly to friends and family,” she says. She has also written (with Michael Ford) and produced seven albums of renegade children’s music. Three of her seven albums have been certified Gold (over 500,000 copies sold) and Philadelphia Chickens, nominated for a Grammy, has been certified Platinum (over 1 million copies sold). Boynton has also directed many music videos of her songs, including the award-winning “One Shoe Blues” starring B.B. King, “Going Home Now” sung by Lyle Lovett, and “Tyrannosaurus Funk” (animated) fabulously voiced by Samuel L. Jackson. She lives in rural New England, and her studio is in a barn with perhaps the only hippopotamus weathervane in America.

Ten of Boynton’s characteristically excitable rabbits put on a Broadway-style song and dance for readers in a board book that bounces along like its stars. Ten cottontails sing, dance, hop, and even form a giant pyramid for a packed auditorium of chickens—and the occasional pig, sheep, and cow (it wouldn’t be a Boynton book without ’em). The rabbits’ song is mostly about their skills, but they aren’t afraid to share their failings: “We’re very good at hopping./ We’re hopping in a row./ We’re not so good at stopping./ It’s The Bunny Rabbit Show!” A downloadable version of the song is available for families who want to join in fully. The bunnies that inhabit Boynton's colorful world put on a musical show for the other animals.The rabbits have taken over the theater. They dance and sing, bragging about their long ears and twitchy noses for the pigs and chickens in the audience. The rhythmic chorus—"We are ten terrific rabbits and we like to dance and sing. / Ten terrific rabbits. We can do almost anything"—is mighty infectious. The author's trademark wit and humor are on full display as the other animals dress up like bunnies and join the massive grand finale. The barnyard cast forms a musical troupe that amuses and delights. Adults will appreciate the clever sight gags, and small children will appreciate the tasteful boasting and empowering jingle. While it's not as complete a vehicle for inculcating emergent language skills as many of Boynton's other books, there's no denying it's got verve.A swell read for the lighthearted. (Board book. 1-3)
