Overview

"Frederick Bailey [is] one of America's most theatrical playwrights." —Beth Henley (Pulitzer winner for Crimes of the Heart)

Co-winner of First Prize at the First Annual New Play Festival at the Actors Theatre of Louisville, later enjoying a widely saluted four-month run in Los Angeles, directed by Stephen Tobolowsky. The Louisville Times called it "a rowdy war drama that has its audience howling with laughter one minute and recoiling in horror the next...a gripping, explosive piece of theatre!"

THE BRIDGEHEAD is a scathing, incendiary Vietnam War drama, set in Cambodia in 1970 during a cross-border incursion conducted by the U.S and South Vietnam to ferret out North Vietnamese bases. During one of these operational sweeps, an American combat unit captures a suspected NVA spy. An NCO is now in charge while they wait in a treacherous no-mans-land for orders from their commanders.

From the Louisville Courier-Journal: "An unrelentingly powerful drama, grippingly successful...stakes out new emotional territory...a harrowing, inexorable climax...Bailey unveils the face of brute violence with a dramatic power [and] an intensity of vision that is absolutely spellbinding. Bailey writes with a directness that avoids inflated symbols and easy pathos and makes you believe in his characters. This is a universe in which fate picks her victims with a terrifying casualness. But it's a world made honest and true, because of Bailey's artistic dignity...compelling drama. I urge you to see it."

In Los Angeles, the L.A. Weekly named it "Pick of the Week...harrowing...provocative... riveting."
Dramalogue singled it out as "Critic's choice...thoroughly thrilling."
The L.A. Herald-Examiner called it "splendid...a shattering experience."

Frederick Bailey's plays have been done off-off Broadway in New York and in various resident, university and waiver theatres from Los Angeles to Boston and London.

"The Bridgehead rages with carnivorous energy...a volcano." —L.A. Free Weekly
"An unsettling battle drama [with] fine performances." —Daily Variety
"Hard-hitting! Go see this play!" —Santa Monica Evening Outlook

"A gifted and visionary writer...Bailey has one of the clearest original voices writing for the theatre in Los Angeles." —L.A. Daily News

"There's no doubt Frederick Bailey is a talented writer. He creates interesting, full-bodied characters, and he develops a plot carefully and with a fine sense of unraveling mystery." —Hollywood Reporter

"I was deeply moved by The Bridgehead and I strongly recommend seeing it." —actor Jon Voight
"The Bridgehead is a powerful and effective ensemble piece." —actor Mike Farrell
"Magnificent ensemble acting...The Bridgehead is a complex and moving piece of work." —actor Jameson Parker
"I loved it! This is a real shot-in-the-arm night of theatre!" —actor Barbara Hershey
"The best theatre I've seen in L.A. in the last ten years...If you see only one play this season, make it The Bridgehead." —director Ulu Grosbard
"An exciting and emotional evening of theatre." —actor Shelley Fabares
"Fascinating...very moving and highly entertaining." —actor William Katt
"Stunningly real performances and the strongest military play since Streamers." —actor Nicolas Coster
"It's not the historians that explain our history, but the artists...The Bridgehead [is] easily the best play of its kind." —screenwriter Michael Elias

More from the Louisville Times: "The Bridgehead never makes speeches about the tragedy of our role in Vietnam or about the horrors of war. None is needed, because the behavior of the people tells the story far more effectively...The play is alive with ironies...The Bridgehead erupts with laughter, anger, frustration and apprehension. Its people roar with laughter to drown out the fear roaring in their ears...These are not the true-blue front line soldiers of traditional war movies and plays, but the real sweating, stinking, cursing, frightened and angry ones...the laughter gives way to nightmare in a final scene that is shattering...a gripping, explosive piece of theatre!"
