About the Author

Mitch Martin is a descendant of some of the earliest pioneers of the North Arkansas Ozarks region. He grew up on a small farm in Searcy County only a few miles from the scenic Buffalo National River. Hunting and fishing were not only a recreation but also a necessary part of everyday life. Mitch spent his early years hunting squirrels and rabbits with his .22 rifle and his dog Smokey. He learned to love the Buffalo River while fishing and hunting with his Uncle Charley Crow, a Choctaw Indian who made his living by farming with a team of mules, along with the sale of raccoon skins and wild ginseng root.

Mitch's unique experiences have allowed him to write a story that blends fiction with the everyday experiences of survival that faced early settlers in the region. Many of these skills have survived longer in the Ozarks than any other region of the country. Mitch is a member of a rapidly disappearing pioneer heritage group that can pass along firsthand knowledge of survival skills used by our ancestors.

Mitch is a graduate of Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri where he received a degree in Wildlife Conservation and an ROTC commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. For the past thirty years he has worked in the financial services industry.

He is the owner of a successful financial services firm as well as an insurance agency in Washington, Missouri where he currently resides with his wife Candi. He is the father of two grown children, Jennifer and Jon, and a grandfather to Skyler and Sophie. He loves hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing and kayaking, especially on the Buffalo River.
