The Boundary Blueprint: A Roadmap for Mental Health & Identity
This book delves into the complex yet crucial topic of personal boundaries and their pervasive impact on our lives—ranging from identity formation and mental health to interpersonal dynamics and societal norms. Titled "The Boundary Blueprint: A Roadmap for Mental Health & Identity," the work is a comprehensive exploration, seamlessly weaving together a rich tapestry of theoretical insights, empirical evidence, and case examples.
This multi-faceted volume is broken down into 16 enlightening chapters. It opens with foundational psychological theories and models, subsequently navigating through intricate matters like the Biopsychosocial model, the DSM-5, and the role of mental health in shaping identity. A foray into the expansive domains of emotional, physical, intellectual, and time boundaries follows, enriched by detailed case examples. Gender roles, cultural dimensions, and socioeconomic factors make their appearance, broadening the discourse and introducing additional layers of complexity.
Chapter 8 is a pivotal turning point, shedding light on the types of boundary violations such as intrusion, enmeshment, and exploitation, followed by their negative psychological ramifications. Here, the exploration digs deeper into dark facets of psychology, like the Dark Tetrad of Personality, laying the groundwork for understanding pathological boundary-crossing behaviors.
The book proceeds to unpack the cognitive and behavioral aspects of assertiveness and offers practical communicative and cognitive restructuring strategies for boundary setting. Crucial skills in negotiation and conflict resolution are also covered, including a fictional case study that illustrates these concepts in a real-world scenario. Further, the text delves into the essential practice of self-care, bringing to light its role in maintaining healthy boundaries and, by extension, a healthy self.
Contemporary concerns are not overlooked; the book delves into the virtual world, discussing the challenges and psychological implications of setting boundaries in digital spaces. The final chapters function as a clarion call for future research and outline unexplored areas in boundary studies, their implications for applied psychology and mental health, as well as ethical considerations in treatment.
Scholarly yet accessible, the book is laden with rich APA-cited references and offers an alphabetical list of key terms for easy navigation. It is a valuable resource not just for psychologists and clinicians, but also for anyone interested in deepening their understanding of the multi-dimensional facets of human boundaries.
"The Boundary Blueprint" is a must-read for those eager to navigate the labyrinthine corridors of the human psyche, empowering them to establish, maintain, and honor boundaries as a cornerstone of a balanced and fulfilling life.

About the Author

About the Author

Rex Henry Thurmond IV MSC, aka “Hank,” the resilient and inspirational voice behind the Viking Mindset Transformational Therapy Podcast, resides in Franklin, TN, where he continuously inspires others in breaking the chains of their past. With his profound educational background, including a BS in Management and Organizational Development from Bethel University and a Master of Science in Applied Psychology from Walden University, Hank has managed to turn the scars of his past into powerful lessons for others.
Born and raised in Dyersburg, TN, in a highly dysfunctional family, Hank worked in an equally dysfunctional family business for 27 grueling years. The constant stress and turmoil led him to leave in 2012 and seek solace in Nashville, TN. It was there that his journey took a sudden, steep plunge. Despite being recruited by Farmers Insurance, Hank lost everything due to crippling anxiety, depression, PTSD, and developmental trauma that rooted from his turbulent past and the mobbing/ostracization perpetrated by members of his family. Homelessness became his reality for a heart-wrenching five years.
In 2016, Hank hit rock bottom. Yet, it was from this very place that he began his climb toward redemption. Sobriety became his shield, and with the support of a driving job in 2018 that had him living in the back of a Sprinter van for a year, he managed to regain his foothold in society. His time in the Sprinter van was not only a testament to his resilience, but it was also his university on wheels - Hank filed his back taxes, enrolled at Walden University’s online graduate program in clinical psychology and earned half of his master's degree in these humble conditions.
Today, Hank is not merely a survivor, but a beacon of hope for others grappling with their own personal demons. Through his work and his popular podcast, he helps countless people discover their strength, face their fears, and create the lives they deserve, firmly believing that even in the darkest corners of life, there is always a way out.
