Description: This collection of essays reviews the history and current status of borderline personality disorder in children.
Purpose: The editor wishes to harmonize the various psychodynamic, environmental, and biological theories on the cause and course of this disorder. This is a worthy objective, as there remains a great deal of debate and disagreement on what constitutes the disorder, and even whether it truly exists. The essays here admirably meet this objective.
Audience: This book is targeted towards practicing child psychotherapists who have a working knowledge of psychodynamic and developmental theory. The editor and authors of the essays present as highly knowledgeable and credible on the topic and they express their opinions with authority.
Features: The essays in the first half of this book cover the history and evolution of the childhood borderline diagnosis. They also nicely summarize current views on the condition. The second half of the book focuses on clinical techniques and case studies.
Assessment: I am very impressed by both the content of the book and the quality of the writing. Psychodynamic theories are too often unnecessarily presented in dense, jargon-laden terminology. This book, written in a lucid, incisive, and accessible manner, is a refreshing exception. The subject matter is tremendously meaningful at a time when psychopharmacology and managed care have led to an unfortunate shift away from a complex, psychodynamic understanding of the challenging patient.
