The Birthday Book/Las Mañanitas is the 4th book in the bilingual (English & Spanish) nursery rhyme collection from Canticos.

This children’s book is based on the popular Mexican birthday song “Las Mañanitas”.

Canticos animated videos will begin to stream across Nickelodeon’s digital platforms starting May 2018.

Concept: Birthday Celebrations.

About the Author

Susie Jaramillo : Susie Jaramillo is a mom, an artist and a creative director raising two bilingual children. She worked for many years in advertising having co-founded the vox collective, a NY-based boutique multicultural agency where she served as Chief Creative Officer until 2012. She attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn where she majored in painting and illustration.

Susie Grew up between Venezuela and the United States, always going back and forth fluently between cultures. As a child, she was exposed to songs and traditions from both the United States and Latin America. To bring to life all the things she loved about her Latino culture she created Canticos and now kids of all ages can enjoy these nursery rhymes and songs! She lives in Brooklyn.

PreS-K–An accordion-style board book with darling, colorful illustrations, The Birthday Book/Las mañanitas is sure to appeal to the preschool crowd. The book illustrates the lyrics of the traditional Mexican birthday song, "Las Mañanitas," in Spanish and in English. The characters are an adorable bunny and several animal friends. Open the book one way and you have the Spanish version, turn the book over and you have the English version. Identical for both versions, the illustrations enhance the opportunity for second language enrichment. They are brightly colored with prominent yellows and blues, and include several flaps for children to lift and further interact with this delightful little book. One of the spreads features a piñata, which provides an opportunity to discuss this traditional game. Of course, accompanying this book with the song "Las Mañanitas" would make it even more entertaining. José-Luis Orozco, a famous children's recording artist, has a lovely version of the tune on his album De colores. The traditional song sung for birthdays in Mexico is presented with an American twist at the end. In this new addition to the Canticos series, Jaramillo has kept to her successful concertina format. The book can be read in Spanish on one side and in English on the other. When someone is celebrating their birthday in Mexico, they are traditionally greeted with "Las mañanitas." According to the song, this was the way that King David greeted the morning, and because it is your birthday we will sing it to you. This bilingual presentation of the song remains faithful to the original in Spanish but has taken a few liberties with the English translation to accommodate for rhyme and meter, always a fine line to walk when translating a song. In both languages the song segues right into the American song traditionally sung at birthday times, the newly copyright-free "Happy Birthday." Young children will find a few flaps to open—such as a window that, when lifted, reveals a rooster crowing at daybreak—that will add to their delight. In the "Happy Birthday" part there is a blank banner in which the name of the birthday child can be inscribed. Not quite as successful as the previous entries but still a charming addition to the series. (Board book. 1-5)
