After nearly 20 years, the publication of this Second Edition of The Biology of the Laboratory Rabbit attests to its popularity within the scientific community as well as to the need to update an expanding database on the rabbit as a major species in laboratory investigation. The principal aim of this text is to provide a comprehensive and authoritative source of scientifically based information on a major laboratory animal species. The text continues to emphasize the normal biology as well as diseases of the European (domestic) rabbit, Orytolagus cuniculus, especially the New Zealand White breed, with occasional reference to other rabbit species (Sylvilagus sp.) and hares (Lepus sp.). New topics have been added to this second edition in response to changing trends in biomedical research and product testing as well as to suggestions from readers.

This second edition (first edition, 1974) is a comprehensive, updated edition that compiles multifaceted aspects of this laboratory species through contributions made by authoritative sources. "The purpose is to describe, in depth, the various biological aspects of the laboratory rabbit, including anatomic and physiologic variation from other mammalian species, diseases, husbandry, and various current uses of the rabbit as an animal model. This book meets its objective as an up-to-date, comprehensive, authoritative source of scientifically based material. "This book is targeted with the lab animal professional in mind, making it the ideal reference for lab animal and pathology residents and specialists. The contributions are provided by credible individuals involved primarily in research and laboratory settings. However, its comprehensive coverage of the general anatomy, husbandry, diseases, and anesthesiology make it a valuable resource for the personal library of small animal practitioners and veterinary students. "The table of contents provided at the beginning of each chapter is a very useful tool for scanning the chapter. The references are numerous and up-to-date. The illustrations and pictures are valuable assets to this book. "The major advancements made in science and lab animal medicine since 1974 necessitate an updated version to the first edition. This book coordinates a vast amount of practical information into one volume.
