Overview

The previous edition of The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology provided important updates and advances in the practice of thyroid cytopathology. It was inspired by new developments in the field of thyroid cytopathology since the publication of the first edition in 2010. These included revised clinical guidelines for the management of patients with thyroid nodules, the introduction of molecular testing as an adjunct to cytopathologic examination, and the reclassification of the non-invasive follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma as non-invasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP).

This new third edition provides updates to the current reporting terminology and diagnostic criteria, including new information on ancillary molecular testing, as well as imaging findings and clinical management. This book provides a more unified approach to diagnosing and reporting thyroid FNA interpretations. It simplifies the reporting structure by settling on just one name for each of the six categories and aligning terminology with the most recent classification of thyroid tumors by the World Health Organization.

Description: This is the second edition of the most widely accepted standard for reporting thyroid cytopathology.
Purpose: This edition updates and revises the 2010 edition to help better classify and unify reporting of thyroid cytopathology while also offering new information from literature review to shed light on outcomes and clinical management of patients.
Audience: This book is aimed at pathologists, pathology trainees, and cytopathology technologists. The book also provides useful information for endocrinologists, surgeons, and radiologists.
Features: The book maintains the original organization based on the classification scheme provided for thyroid FNA diagnosis. It includes a large number of quality photomicrographs that illustrate the morphological features described in the text. Each section includes explanatory notes on the entities, diagnostic caveats, and differential diagnoses. Each section also includes information about management and implied risks of malignancy. There are also sample reports to help provide pathologists with a resource to express their diagnosis in a clear and succinct manner. This edition includes updates recommended by a panel of pathologists and endocrine surgeons based on a review of the current literature. The suggested changes were presented at the 2016 ICC meeting in Yokohama, Japan, in a symposium, "TBSRTC: Past, Present, and Future." These changes include an updated review of the implied risk of malignancy for each of the diagnostic categories, inclusion of noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features, increased discussion of molecular discoveries, and many other updates. Overall, this book does an excellent job at improving the original version while also maintaining the high quality of information and resources that pathologists expect from the first edition.
