As part of the triangular trade of global capital, slaves were shipped from Africa to the Americas from the late 1400s to the mid-1800s. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, an estimated ten to twelve million Africans were forcibly relocated during this period. This volume takes readers beyond the statistics to the real human cost of the slave trade. Chapters cover the destruction of the rich, diverse cultures in West Africa, the active role of Africans in selling other Africans, the harrowing journey on the Middle Passage during which millions faced starvation, disease, and abuse from the ship's crew, and the slave trade's grim legacy.
