About the Author

Dashiell Hammett (1894-1961) is best known for his creation of the hard-boiled detective Sam Spade (THE MALTESE FALCON) and Nick and Nora Charles (THE THIN MAN). Although regarded as one of the finest detective writers of all time, Hammett wrote his last novel in 1934 and devoted much of the rest of his life in support of leftist causes. During the 1950s, he was investigated by HUAC, refused to co-operate, and was blacklisted.
