About the Author

Perhaps there was someone out there who expected 2021 to be a vast improvement on 2020—a deadly pandemic in the rearview mirror, the country unifying after a volatile election, and a restoration of normalcy after a chaotic year.
Of course, as we all know, that isn’t what happened. Change is here to stay, and we will not be going back to a pre-2020 world. Many of the crises we faced have metastasized and revealed divisions that will not be resolved by simply answering questions about vaccinations, mask-wearing, or whether the presidential election was a fair fight.
These fault lines of conflict are merely the outward manifestations of cultural and spiritual tectonic shifts that have been surging beneath the surface of society for years. And now, more than ever, it will take leaders with steady hands, firm convictions, and compassionate hearts to help our churches, businesses, and organizations navigate an uncertain future.
Here at AVAIL, our contributors tackled these issues with grace and insight, and this book is an attempt to compile some of that wisdom into bite-sized pieces that will stimulate reflection and action. We have gathered quotes from our journal, books, and podcast and grouped them around twenty-one themes—from self-awareness and vision to communication and generosity.
However, we felt it was important to close the book on the theme of love—a quality that is perhaps underrepresented in leadership literature but which is indispensable for anyone who prioritizes spiritual fruitfulness over worldly success.
Not only will love—both for God and for the people He has entrusted to us—cover a multitude of leadership blunders, but, apart from love, our verbal eloquence, tactical proficiency, and strategic foresight are essentially worthless (to rephrase the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 13).
In a world awash in contempt, leaders who love will stand out, and their legacies will outlast the ministries they found, the churches they plant, and the businesses they launch.
