Volumes I-III of what will be a five-volume set on the epidemiology and ecology of the arboviruses, the risk factors underlying the appearance of disease in the community, and the roles of arthropod vector and vertebrate hosts in virus transmission. Emphasis is placed on the field and laboratory evidence for involvement of vector and host species, on the ecological dynamics which determine their ability to spread infection, and on elements of transmission cycles which are susceptible to surveillance, field investigation, prevention, and control. The first volume, devoted to the variables which affect arbovirus transmission, provides background and also contains guidelines for the design of future epidemiological investigations. With these general principles, the student, teacher, or research worker will be able to structure specific knowledge about individual arbovirus infections found in Volumes II (ISBN 4386-2), III (ISBN 4387-2), and the as yet unpublished volumes.
