About the Author

Joy Gallagher, daughter of Paul and Nelle Shasteen Quandt, was born in Franklin County, Tennessee and graduated from Franklin County High School and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She is the wife of Jim Gallagher of Winchester, and they are the parents of three children.

Joy’s love of history began in 1980 when she inherited a box of genealogy from an aunt. Since then she has published three books -- The Ancestors and Descendants of William Shasteen, Sr., of Franklin County, Tennessee; The Gallaghers of the Pelham Valley of Middle Tennessee and Beyond; and Glimpses into the Lives and Times of the Confederate Soldiers Known to Be Buried in City Cemetery, Winchester, Tennessee.

A longtime member of the Franklin County Historical Society where she has served on the board of directors and as society historian, she was asked to be a member of the Winchester Historic Preservation Committee in 2002 by the Winchester City Mayor. She has served as chairman of that group from 2003 to 2021. The committee published a book about the historic homes in Winchester in 2005 and a 200-year history of the businesses around the square in 2009. Joy considers researching family and local history a most interesting and rewarding labor of love.
