About the Author

Simon Bricker is Consultant Anaesthetist at the Countess of Chester Hospital and a former examiner for the FRCA (Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists) examination. He is a prolific and accomplished lecturer and presenter, with over thirty lectures delivered at national and international meetings. He is the author of Short Answer Questions in Anaesthesia (Cambridge, 2002) as well as the first and second editions of The Anaesthesia Science Viva Book.

Description: This is an update of a review for the clinical sciences oral examination for the FRCA final exam. The first edition was published in 2004.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a range of potential questions for the clinical sciences oral exam and offer clear, succinct answers. Tying the clinical science underpinnings to clinical practice is important both for the exam and for the practice of anesthesia, and the author has done an excellent job of presenting the material.
Audience: The most obvious audience for the book are candidates for the FRCA clinical sciences oral exam, but anyone involved in the practice of anesthesia will find this book interesting and easy to read.
Features: The author has selected 150 areas that might appear on the exam. He then explains the significance of each topic as well as likely areas for further discussion as an oral exam on the topic progresses. The book is well written and easy to read. The only peculiarity is that the topics seem to come in a random order (outside of their division into the four areas of applied anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and physics). However, that's how the oral exams are too, moving quickly from one area to another unrelated topic quite quickly.
Assessment: This is one of the most readable review books for a certification exam that I have come across. The information is interesting and the answers are appropriate for an eight-minute discussion during an oral exam. Mastery of the topics in this book will surely leave a candidate well prepared for an oral exam on the clinical science underlying the contemporary practice of anesthesia.
