A cross between a traditional Roget's and an A-to-Z thesaurus, this resource uses an alphabetical arrangement to present 20,000 headword entries and 150,000 cross-referencing synonyms. The headword entries present actual groups of synonyms, as the publisher's other so-called synonyms are actually cross references to the headword entries. Thesaurus entries are located at the bottom of each page, while dictionary definitions from the same part of the alphabet are located at the top. Approximately 70,000 dictionary definitions are included, the same number found in the 2003 edition of the American Heritage Desk Dictionary. Lacking the well-known usage panel, the new dictionary's brief definitions offer no etymology. Inevitably, this work competes with The Oxford Desk Dictionary and Thesaurus (2002), the Oxford American Dictionary and Thesaurus with Language Guide (2003), and the second edition of Webster's New World Dictionary and Thesaurus (WNW). Relying on a similar split-page design, WNW offers longer definitions and includes some etymology; its thesaurus entries also seem longer, though there are fewer entries-13,000, to be exact. Still, WNW is not consistently superior to American Heritage. For example, the headword "capricious" lists over 20 synonyms in American Heritage, while WNW offers no listing at all. In addition, both resources from Oxford directly follow many dictionary definitions with thesaurus entries in the same alphabetical listing and likewise both offer far more entries than American Heritage for competitive prices. Bottom Line The main strength of this dictionary, certainly for readers willing to flip pages, are the numerous cross-referencing synonyms that guide to headwords.
