Overview

As an owner of a strata title unit, you probably already know that what affects one part of the building can affect everyone in the building – especially when it comes to repairs. By far the most stressful whole-of-building repair you are likely to encounter is the one triggered by the discovery of concrete cancer, as it is known. In other words: when your building is no longer structurally sound and you need to have the problem repaired soon, if not immediately.

Whether your building is in the early stages of concrete cancer or the problem is advanced, the repair works are likely to be time consuming, costly and disruptive. While there’s no escaping this reality, you can make the process less difficult if you have some information.

The Amateur’s Guide to Managing Concrete Cancer Repairs is written not by an expert in repairs but by an owner who had to learn it all the hard way – the very hard way. This book will tell you what you need to know from the very start to the very end of your repair works. It’s divided into clear sections that take you through the repair process and includes a section on troubleshooting, for all those issues that will (not may) come up.

This manual won’t help you avoid the repairs, but it will help you avoid feeling like you have no power or knowledge about what’s going on.

NB: The content of this book is written with Australian readers in mind.

About the Author

In 2012 Sophie Hamley found herself managing large-scale building repairs in her apartment block in Sydney, Australia. She had another owner to help with this task, but they didn't have anyone to help them. Learning as they went, they brought in the project in significantly less time and significantly less money than the original projections. It was a difficult task, and they wished they had a manual. So, when it was over, Sophie wrote one.

Sophie works in the publishing industry and in her spare time writes for and produces a country music website as well as teaching yoga.
