The Alibi of Tyrants
Redemption (Apolutrósis) refers supremely to the work of Christ on our behalf, whereby HE purchases us and HE ransoms us at the price of HIS own life, securing our deliverance from the bondage and condemnation of Sin. The New Testament speaks of Christ's saving work in this way frequently. Romans 8:34 says that Christ "is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us." In 1 John 2:1, we read that Christ is our "advocate with the Father," and from Hebrews 7:25, we learn that Jesus "always lives to intercede" for us. Nevertheless, it is highly amusing when Christians say that they are "good and loving," and that somehow this helps with their Salvation. My response is, "So tell me more about your New Age Bible?" In Isaiah 64:6, we learn that, "We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags, we all do fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away." Subsequently, linking Salvation to "good works" is tantamount to a 4-year-old approaching a Ph.D. Physics Professor and turning in a finger painting as a doctoral thesis. That's how ridiculous it is to approach The Lord with "good works" and a pile of "loving deeds", except multiply this situation by ten billion. By definition, The Lord's criterion and standard for goodness is so many magnitudes above any mere mortal's conceptualization of goodness and love that the disparity is incomprehensible, thereby imploring Christ's intercession on our behalf.
