In the Time of Love is a novel by Naguib Mahfouz that portraits some of his most memorable characters: Sitt Ain, with her large house, her garden, her pet cats, a strong, proactive personality who's seen as the mother of her neighborhood. On the contrary, her son Ezzat is so different, apparently emotional and unsure of his choices. The lives of his childhood friends, Sayyeda, Hamdoun, and Badriyam become ever more entangled throughout the years, and they face encounters with commitment, ambition, treachery, and love. This mosaic comes together to tell a story of twentieth-century Egypt, through an intriguing tale with an unexpected outcome.
