Chapter One

On a shore near the ocean, Burt the turtle watched as the other water animals played in the sea. He sat on the rocks, feeling left out because he was afraid of the water.

Burt heard his sister Tori calling him from the water. "Burt! Come play! The water's nice, come in and have fun with us!" Burt got excited and ran towards the water. At the edge he stopped and looked in cautiously. He walked in but as the water got deeper, he slowly turned back.

Crush, the shark, made fun of him, saying "What's the matter, Burt? Too scared to come in?" The others started to laugh at him, and Burt ran away, ashamed.

Back on the beach, Burt met his friend Pauly the Pelican. "What's the matter, Burt?" Pauly says. Burt replied, "I'm too scared to swim with the others." Pauly said to Burt, "I was scared of flying once. I was so afraid that I'd get made fun of because I wasn't good at it." "What did you do?" Burt asked.

"I kept trying my hardest and overcame my fear, and now I can fly with all my friends. It's my favorite thing to do! You can learn to swim, Burt, just don't listen to what the others say," Pauly answered. Burt said, "Thanks, Pauly, I'll try!"

Burt was filled with confidence. He walked back to the shore and decided to give swimming a chance.

Burt's friends were now closer to the shore, on the rocks, talking about the Big Race. It was the biggest event in Tidal Town. Everybody swam in the race. Crush was talking loudly about how sure he was that he would win. "I'm the fastest swimmer. I'm just the best. There's no way I'm going to lose the Big Race!"

Lily the frog came up to Burt. "Hey, Burt! You're going to swim in the Big Race, aren't you?" Burt shook his head. "I don't know, Lily. Crush seems like he's going to win. I'm too scared to swim, anyway." Lily answered, "Don't be scared, Burt. You know, I used to be scared of leaping onto my lily pads."
