Description: This is the go-to quick review book for the American Board of Surgery In-Training Exam (ABSITE) and for day-to-day quick facts during surgical training. It covers a lot of the material that is tested on the in-training exam and does so in a bulleted format that is easy to read. The previous edition was published in 2016.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a quick reference on a variety of surgical topics for surgical trainees and/or medical students and to cover a range of material tested on the ABSITE. These are worthy objectives and this book plays an important role in many surgical trainees' preparation for their exam. The book is the same in print and online, and the online version provides an electronic version that can be accessed in real time without the need to carry a book around. This book definitely accomplishes these objectives and is likely the most common book used for such purposes.
Audience: It is intended primarily for surgical residents, but the book also can be used by medical students during their surgical rotations. The author is well recognized for this book and, given its popularity among surgical trainees, he must be doing something right.
Features: Each of the book's chapters covers a specific topic related to surgery. It starts by covering the basic sciences such as cell biology, molecular biology, immunology, and pharmacology. It then moves on to different subspecialties or body systems such as burns, critical care, endocrinology, vascular, gastrointestinal, and soft tissue. One feature that is helpful for the ABSITE exam but is not always included in surgical training is the inclusion of specialties that are not traditionally part of general surgery training any more, such as urology, gynecology and orthopedics. The 44 chapters range from one to 20 pages long. The brevity yet salient nature of each topic makes it easy for busy surgical residents to reference or study. The topics that are more heavily tested on the ABSITE have more content such as trauma, breast, and colorectal surgery. Each chapter is broken down into subtopics, separated by headings. The use of bold text to highlight key aspects or important facts about each subtopic is very helpful and can make going back to look for something specific much easier. There are several tables and diagrams that present the material in an easy to understand way; however, there are some areas where tables/figures would be helpful that don't have them well as other areas where tables/figures are not necessary.
Assessment: This is an indispensable reference for surgical trainees. It is commonly referred to and easily recognized as "Fiser" among surgical trainees. I have two previous versions and have used it every year to supplement my studying for the ABSITE. Many of my colleagues use this book as well and I see many residents carrying it around in their white coats. I have taken the ABSITE three times, and the content of this book very closely matches the material tested on the exam. While this book alone is not sufficient to prepare for the ABSITE, it is the only one I am reading in the one to two weeks preceding the test. The book is very easy to read and I can get through it in a couple of days if necessary, despite a busy schedule. The bulleted format and the bolded text really helps me review and understand a complex subject with ease. If I notice I am deficient in a certain subject, it will prompt me to seek out a more comprehensive review of that subject. I have been so pleased with this book that I have not used any other ABSITE review books. The content and figures in this book mirror that of Greenfield's Surgery: Scientific Principles and Practice, 6th edition, Mulholland et al. (Wolters Kluwer, 6th edition). As with almost all medical literature, the science and practice of medicine is constantly changing, therefore books in this area must change as well. While you can probably get away with previous editions of this book to study for the ABSITE, some content will be missing and/or inaccurate, which could compromise your knowledge as well as your performance on the ABSITE.
