A Nigeria which when you take a closer look, is completely insane. A Nigeria where your driver "borrows" and totally wrecks your car in order to commit a series of crimes. A Nigeria where you're getting bopped by the nice ladies at the local market. A Nigeria where you're sleeping with a gun under your pillow. A Nigeria where the traffic jams make Oxford Street look like Monaco's Grand Prix. Frankly, there's no limit to what can happen, and it does happen.
This book is named after article 419 in the Nigerian Criminal Code part of chapter 38 dealing with fraud - "Obtaining property by false pretences; Cheating". The term 419 has come to symbolize the advance-fee scam that everyone who has an email has been subject to which basically translates into "I am a Nigerian Prince/Kongolese Banker/anything else that might fly in possession of gazzilions of dollars that are stuck one way or the other, but if you help me with a limited amount of funding we will split the proceeds and live happily ever after".
In legal terms/internet lingo we would call it crowdfunding I presume. However this is highly illicit, so 419´s is as good as any term.
