Kimberly DiCuccio Heckert, MD is Director of the Spasticity Management Fellowship and Clinical Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Brian A. Davis, MD is Clinical Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in the UC Davis health system in Sacramento, California. He is also Clinical Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the UNLV Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine in Las Vegas, Nevada. He also practices PM&R sports medicine at Intermountain Healthcare's Sunset Clinic in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Description: This concise pocket reference for the musculoskeletal and peripheral nerve exam provides step-by-step explanations of the patient's and the examiner's role in each exam, along with interpretations and clinical pearls.
Purpose: It is intended to be an easy, quick pocket reference for medical students, therapists, and experienced practitioners to use to complete a musculoskeletal or peripheral nerve exam in three minutes.
Audience: The authors target everyone from medical students to therapists and experienced practitioners, but I believe the book would most benefit trainees and, possibly, primary care physicians.
Features: The book covers a great deal of anatomy with multiple illustrations, diagrams, and tables. The muscle atlas and tables are well done and great guides. The chapters are broken up into different aspects of a physical exam, making it easy to locate the area of interest. Additional chapters on topics such as gait and the spinal cord are a real bonus.
Assessment: The illustrations, diagrams, and tables of the musculoskeletal exam are the highlights of this quick reference. The step-by-step exam explanations are perfect for trainees, providing medical students, residents, therapists, and some practitioners with a great resource. It also serves well as a teaching reference for trainees and primary care providers. The majority of the information is too basic for experienced musculoskeletal/orthopedic/physiatrist practitioners.
