About the Author

Mujtaba H. Naqvi is a multimedia artist who has spent years taking thousands of photographs of hundreds of species throughout the State of Texas.

Many of those portraits appeared in his traveling exhibit, Species at Stake, which highlighted the countless creatures we’re constantly surrounded by - but may not notice. Most of these animals, though integral to our ecosystem, are easily overlooked because we do not interact with them on a daily basis. In his exhibits, Naqvi enlarges the portraits to help the audience fully visualize, and thus realize, these lives. When possible, Species at Stake is exhibited on the floor as an interactive exhibit, such as at the National Butterfly Center, to force the audience to question why they are often more uncomfortable walking on photographs of living creatures than on the creatures themselves.

Naqvi has been working on Species at Stake since 2016 and exhibiting the work since 2019. His work has been featured at Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge, The Upper Valley Art League, The Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce, The Border Theater, Speer Memorial Library, Bentsen Tower, Pharr Public Library, and numerous other locations.

Over a hundred of the birds captured in his collection are featured in his first photo book, Rio Grande Valley Birds, also available at barnesandnoble.com

Farwa Naqvi has an MFA in Creative Writing with a concentration in non-fiction from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Since then, she's been an instructor of college composition, rhetoric, and literature courses. She stumbled upon the immense biodiversity in Texas during her time as Tourism Director for the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce. Using her background in marketing from UT Austin, she promoted Mission, a city in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. While organizing the Texas Butterfly Festival, she traveled to the El Cielo Biosphere Reserve, a cloud forest in Central America, and worked with naturalists to gain insight into the multitude of factors that make the South Texas region one of the most biodiverse in the United States.

She has collaborated with Mujtaba H. Naqvi on Species at Stake and Rio Grande Valley Birds as writer and editor, and in life as partner-in-crime. Her work has been published in The Monitor, RiverSedge, and The Texas Review.
