Mail-order bride Amelia Carson expects her future husband, Dallas Leigh, to meet her when she gets off the train in Fort Worth. However, a broken leg prevents him from traveling, so the job of escorting her falls to his brother, Houston. Women are scarce, but Houston, who had lost an eye and was badly scarred during the Civil War, should pose no romantic threat. Soon Houston realizes that he can't watch his brother marry the woman he has come to love. The author writes directly and movingly about the shattering effect the Civil War has on three of its survivors. With its superb levels of characterization and poignantly satisfying plot, this is a book readers will treasure.
