Overview

The piano pieces featured in this book are part of the Composiciones de María Teresa Carreño (Compositions of María Teresa Carreño), a set of piano works that Carreño composed between 1860 and 1861, when she was between 6 and 7 years old. The set contains a collection of fifteen dances (all of them included in this edition) and three capriccios (which will be published later). These piano pieces are the earliest compositions of the iconic venezuelan pianist and composer, and represent a testimony of her genius. This collection of dances is ideal for late elementary to early advanced piano students. Each of the pieces helps build up the essential foundations for more advanced romantic music, as students explore and master the patterns and stylistic features of the waltz, mazurka, polka and danza genres. The variety of keys, characters/moods and technical challenges found in this collection make it a valuable source for both technique and musicianship growth. Besides, learning one or more of these pieces will keep students motivated to practice and sit at the piano, as the works are short, easy to learn and pleasant to listen to. In this collection of dances, you will find the perfect repertoire choice for studio classes, recitals, and competitions. It is an invaluable source of Romantic Latin American Repertoire for Children. After studying all the works in this collection, students will be ready for Chopin´s Waltzes Op. 69 N° 1-2, Waltz in A minor B. 150, Mazurkas Op. 67 N° 2 and 4, among many others.

About the Author

Teresa Carreño was a Venezuelan concert pianist, composer, piano teacher and opera singer who conquered audiences throughout the world with her fiery temperament and virtuoso playing at the piano. She was one of the few female pianists who achieved a successful international concert career and world recognition during the second half of the 19th and early years of the 20th century. She was admired by the most important musical figures of the time, such as Gioachino Rossini, Johannes Brahms, Franz Liszt, Anton Rubinstein and Louis Moreau Gottschalk, among many others, and was acclaimed by the audiences. Throughout a successful career of more than 50 years, Teresa Carreño performed at the most important Halls of the world, and with the most prestigious orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. She performed intensely throughout the United States and Europe, and also across Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, South Africa, Canada, Mexico and South America. She performed under the baton of Gustav Mahler and Hans von Bülow and became an active promoter of the music of Edvard Grieg, Edward MacDowell and Camille Saint-Saëns. Besides her remarkable career as a concert pianist, Teresa Carreño was also a prominent and successful composer. Throughout her life she composed over 60 works for solo piano and a few pieces for orchestra, voice and piano, chorus, and string quartet. Many of her compositions were published during her lifetime and sold successfully, which made her music popular among people. One of her most popular pieces was the Kleiner Waltzer (Mi Teresita), which was printed in several countries. Carreño´s output for piano mostly consists of salon music. This includes waltzes, mazurkas, polkas, nocturnes, ballades, and polkas, among others, that comprise her legacy for the piano repertoire.
