For a new tyer coming into the sport, the task of selecting what flies to tie and the materials to tie them with can be sort of a “sensory overload” experience. The 10 flies we present here are easy to tie and fun to fish. They will also start the beginning tier on some basic techniques that can be carried over to other fly patterns. Some of these are our own patterns, some of these have been tried and true over the test of time.
We view fly tying instructions like our grandparents viewed recipes for cooking the Sunday afternoon dinner…a pinch here, a dash there. They didn’t get crazy on exact measurements and in the end, it all tasted good! In this book, we give you basic recipes for tying some flies, but like in nature, they are not absolute.
Please feel free to alter them (colors, hook sizes, etc.) to your liking. Experiment with them - have fun creating flies of your own! We are also fortunate to be writing this book together as husband and wife. Together we have shared a lot of fun times in this sport, as well as traveling to many beautiful places that fly-fishing will take you to.
