Overview

Teen Time: The Young Years of Rock & Roll, Vol. 3 contains 20 pop tracks recorded for Eric Records in the late '50s and early '60s. This is squeaky-clean teen music of the era, post-Chuck Berry and early Elvis, pre-Beatlemania. Four of the songs were Top Five hits recorded by one-hit wonders Carl Dobkins Jr. ("My Heart Is an Open Book"), Robin Luke ("Susie Darlin'"), Dodie Stevens ("Pink Shoe Laces"), and the Crescendos ("Oh Julie"). Even though half of these tunes failed to reach the Top 20, a few certainly had hit potential and relied on passionate performances over novelty lyrics or sappy dramatic string arrangements, including Arthur Alexander's "You Better Move On" (also covered by the Rolling Stones), future Motown lyricist Eddie Holland's "Jamie," and Johnny Nash crooning "A Very Special Love," 15 years prior to his chart-topping reggae classic "I Can See Clearly Now." ~ Al Campbell
