About the Author

Dr. Willenbrock is currently an athletic administrator in Washington with twenty years of football coaching experience; eighteen at the college level. He started his career at San Francisco State (DII), and after a stint at The University of South Dakota (DII), he returned to Pennsylvania assisting at Allegheny College (DIII). In 2002 he accepted the head job at The University of Puget Sound (WA) and went to work transforming the culture of the Football Team. He led them to their most productive 5 consecutive seasons in 20 years from 2004-2008.
Through the trials and challenges involved with a turnaround process, he began an intense interest and study in the dynamics of team leadership and earned a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Seattle University in 2009. The topic of his dissertation; Shared Leadership as a System of Team Captaincy in College Football, provides insight on an alternative to the traditional "team captain" model used almost exclusively in team sport. After going 1-17 his first two seasons at Puget Sound, it became apparent that one critical aspect of team culture/ performance had not yet been addressed: peer leadership (the influence of teammates on each other).
Using a Shared Peer Leadership approach, a transformative culture was established. The Leadership teaching strategies and lessons used through the culture change established a platform for the C.L.A.S.S. Leadership Development Curriculum. A shared leadership system creates culture change that increases member citizenship behavior, buy-in, enthusiasm, mutual respect, communication, service and eliminates group/ individual Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying behavior. Team Captains often elevate to leadership status based Personality, Position, Power and Performance; factors unrelated to leadership ability. A pro-active, purposeful commitment to develop individual Self-Leadership enables Coaches to effectively execute a system of leadership development that will pay dividends in the short term and lasting lessons into the future. The C.L.A.S.S. Leadership Development Curriculum has proven adaptable as the basis of a high school freshman leadership class. As schools and athletic coaches search for an effective leadership curriculum, Dr. Willenbrock has developed standards, assessments and lesson plans that address many of the key concepts included in the complete three Module Leadership Development Curriculum.
