About the Author

Dr. Taylor is Harvard trained and is internationally recognized for her research in skin of color. She is the director of the first-of-its kind Skin of Color Center at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, NYC. She is chair of the Women's Task Force and a member of the Health Care Delivery Committee and the Minority Student Mentors Program for the American Academy of Dermatology. In May of this year, Amistad Publishing (Harper Collins) published a trade bok entitled BROWN SKIN: DR. SUSAN TAYLOR'S PRESCRIPTION FOR FLAWLESS KING HAIR AND NAILS.

Description: This comprehensive, general dermatology book encompasses the major disease entities but with an emphasis on clinical presentation in pigmented skin types. There are many color photographs illustrating how inflammatory conditions can appear differently in darker skin. The chapter on hair and scalp disorders discusses the challenges in caring for African hair, particular products that should be used, and differences in styling techniques that can lead to unique shaft injuries and susceptibility to infections and inflammatory processes.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate dermatologists in the unique aspects of diagnosing and caring for patients with darker pigmented skin types.
Audience: The audience is dermatologists.
Features: There are detailed discussions of hair treatments that are only used by patients with African hair, such as hair straightening procedures. The book reviews new topical treatments for vitiligo, and notes special precautions when using lasers in pigmented skin. It also explains the differences between lighter colored skin and darker colored skin on a molecular level, which is important to understand when choosing therapies and realizing that many disorders of hyperpigmentation will be recalcitrant.
Assessment: This second edition is definitely needed as there are new diseases and we have discovered better treatments for many entities. The book gives readers a good feel for how to care for our Fitzpatrick skin types IV, V, and VI.
