Description: This book reviews all the major targeted therapies currently used to treat patients with cancer.
Purpose: The purpose, as noted in the introduction, is to further educate nurses who work with targeted cancer therapies on how these drugs work in the context of the emerging knowledge in the field. This book is needed to help nurses understand how these medications work and how to manage side effects.
Audience: Nurses working with cancer patients are the intended audience. The author is an oncology clinical instructor.
Features: The book covers all the major classes of targeted therapy from how they work to how to manage their side effects. It is extremely thorough and includes a useful glossary in the back. However, it presumes a level of knowledge of cell and molecular biology that many nurses do not have. It may be more useful for nurses who work in advanced practice roles who may have a more in-depth knowledge of biology.
Assessment: This is a good quality book, but it may be more suitable for advanced practice nurses than for most nurses currently working at the bedside. The subject is important, but the author seems to assume readers have a certain baseline knowledge that I do not believe many nurses working with these patients have.
