"Tapetul galben" este considerată o operă importantă a literaturii feministe americane. O femeie care suferă de o boală psihică este blocată într-o cameră de soțul ei din motive de sănătate mentală. Ea devine obsedată de tapetul galben al camerei.
Este vorba rolul femeilor în societate, nuvela ilustrând modul în care lipsa autonomiei femeilor este în detrimentul bunăstării lor mentale, emoționale și chiar fizice. "Tapetul galben" este în esență un răspuns la medicina care a încercat să vindece depresia printr-un "remediu de odihnă".
