Tales of Three Men in a Boat
Chaos and laughter erupt as three intrepid gents escape wives and civilisation as we know it to recreate a modern, black-humoured version of Jerome K. Jerome’s “Three Men in a Boat”.
In over 200 swashbuckling tales of muddles, mishaps, breakdowns and derring-do, The Captain recounts their voyage aboard the Lorna II during the English summer of 2010. Aided and abetted by The First Mate and The Cabin Boy, it’s a rare character on their travels who emerges unscathed from their “wit” and boundless ability to give as good as they get. Discover the man with all the toys, the naughty-but-nice T-shirt, the curse of the peaked-hat brigade, a real-life Montmorency, the mystery of the pink panties, the good, the bad and several uglies: The Wives of Henry VIII and the secret life of the PORG. Enjoy the frustration of the crew as they are thrown out from not one, but TWO pubs in the same night while on a “crawl” for real ales (and plenty of them) and come unhinged when they appear to lose both their bikes and their vessel!
Politically incorrect at every opportunity, “Tales of Three Men in a Boat” nonetheless offers an abundance of buffoonery and historical detail about the River Thames, its pub life and the characters who’ve roamed its paths over the centuries (and still do!) The humour may be dark and tinged with sarcasm but, just like the author’s beloved Thames, it remains timeless.
You’ll want a copy in every bathroom, but please keep it away from the kids!

About the Author

Jerome wrote his book over a hundred and twenty years ago but even today his humorous travelogue offers a lot of enjoyment to thousands of people from all over the world and often to people who have never even travelled to Jolly Olde England.
I asked myself what he might have thought about my version of his classic. I would like to think that his reply would have been something like “Many parallels exist between the two but I probably would not like to be around at the time the new version, if you can call it that was written. When I wrote my book the Thames was such a wonderful, idyllic and magical place to just wile away those lazy, balmy summer’s days. The world has undergone such rapid changes over the last century, bringing both good and bad. The modern-day humorist or satirist must grab the bull by the horns and learn to adapt his content according to the times and trends of the day.”
The Thames has historic roots which span the course of many centuries. It has been known as both a River of Death and a River of Pleasure but it is as the latter that it became one of the great loves of the Victorians. Even we, as busy and unsentimental modern-day Elizabethans, can be enchanted by its beauty and charmed by the wealth of amusements that flourish along its course. It simply captures our life blood!
I hope that this book further highlights the popularity of this Royal river as Jerome’s book did all those years ago.
It was perhaps my good fortune to learn that most of Jerome’s novel was actually based on a dialogue with his wife and not his esteemed friends George and Carl. He wrote most of the book away from the Thames, just after he had returned from his honeymoon, but clearly he had visited many of the hostelries which he mentions. All these inns and pubs with the exception of The Crown at Marlow are still in existence and with a little imagination, you may even be able to take a trip back in time and share many of the high jinks that Jerome and his “friends” enjoyed. And if you are even braver and care to venture forth between Kingston-upon-Thames and Oxford either by boat, bicycle or on foot, a journey enhanced of course by visitations to the many public houses, you will probably be able to create your own series of memorable, magic moments just as The Captain, The First Mate and The Cabin Boy did during the Summer of 2010.
