Symphony of Steel
Ricki Nordegren was born and raised in the Hinterland, an extensive village surrounded by the towering Rampart in the midwestern region of Illiana. But for twenty years, the Hinterland has been under the tyrannical reign of Sovereign Solomon Teras, who had placed a kill order on the Nordegren clan before Ricki was born.
Solomon's reason? He claimed the Nordegren clan was responsible for the Hinterland's high crime rate and presented a danger to public safety.
The real reason, though? Solomon is working under the Overlord, a demonic Deity who had told him that the Nordegren bloodline contains the Martyr, a freedom fighter destined to destroy the Overlord before he can take infinite control of the Fates and exterminate the Lemnashai, an Immortal race sworn to ward off the evils Mortals are helpless against. Solomon's task for the Overlord is to find and destroy the Martyr, so he targets the whole Nordegren clan.
Most Hinterlanders gladly obey and believe Solomon's every word. Very few are brave enough to defy Solomon. Among those few are Ricki's father, Eivin, a blacksmith notorious for illegally forging and selling swords to civilians and the Steel Marines, an underground resistance gang working against Solomon's regime.
A sudden shift occurs when Eivin refuses to visit his dying father, so Ricki goes in his place. But her visit turns grim when she discovers her grandfather under the Overlord's possession and the Fatekeeper, an interdimensional container linked to the Fates, in his farmhouse.
Meanwhile, Bernard, a Lemnashai Knight, slays one of Solomon's regiments outside the Rampart so that his tribe can breach the Hinterland and find the Fatekeeper. The tribe makes it in, but Bernard gets severely wounded in battle and is later picked up by a wagon driven by Ricki's uncle, Odin, and his friend, Amir.
Jimmie, another Lemnashai, breaks into Ricki's grandfather's home to find the Fatekeeper. However, when Ricki opens the Fatekeeper, it projects into her mind a portrayal of her dying in a duel against the Overlord, followed by a warrior beheading the Overlord and carrying Ricki's body up into Heaven. When Ricki regains her awareness, Jimmie bows to her and proclaims that she is the Martyr, a star-crossed savior his people have been anticipating for three hundred years.
Solomon shows up with a military force and sets fire to Ricki's grandfather's house. A battle between Solomon's army and the Lemnashai ensues while Ricki barely escapes the inferno with her life. She leaves the Fatekeeper behind in the process, which Solomon later finds in the ashes and takes for himself.
Upon finding evidence that Solomon found the Fatekeeper, Ricki does a secret task for Solomon's wife in exchange for details on where Solomon is keeping it and what he plans to do with it. But with the Fatekeeper in Solomon's hands, he's got the Fates on his side.
First, Solomon sets a deadly sundown curfew to gain ground on the Steel Marines and to track down Bernard for killing forty of his troops.
Second, Solomon murders Eivin, which compels the Steel Marines to declare war on Solomon. In turn, riots erupt throughout the Hinterland.
While the riots distract Solomon, Ricki burglarizes Solomon's home with Jimmie's help to locate the Fatekeeper. But Solomon walks in on them and summons the Overlord with the Fatekeeper.
The last thing Ricki expects is for the Overlord to show up through Solomon's body to try killing her. Jimmie explains that if the Overlord kills her himself, he'll become mortal; but if he kills her through another's body--such as Solomon's--then he'll remain immortal. After a close call with death, Ricki escapes Solomon's temple with the Fatekeeper and returns it to the divine altar that shields it from the Overlord's power.
With the Overlord in his body, Solomon is untouchable. And since Ricki has taken the Fatekeeper back, the Overlord will stop at nothing to destroy her. She runs for her life, only to wind up cornered by Solomon's militia during a raid. That's when Bernard steps in and saves Ricki's life by throwing Solomon in front of his own firing squad. Bernard then pledges to protect Ricki from Solomon and the Overlord for the rest of her life.
Riots and battles erupt in the streets. Ricki and Bernard try to flee the Hinterland, but Solomon's army is everywhere beyond the Rampart, trapping them. As Ricki searches for another way out, she sees Solomon's carriage chasing down Odin and Amir's wagon in the countryside with the assumption that Ricki is inside. With Bernard in tow, Ricki charges into Solomon's army to stop Solomon.
By shooting down one of Solomon's comrades, Bernard stops the carriage just as Solomon's army overtakes him and Ricki. Ricki is fatally wounded, causing Bernard to fight off Solomon's army alone. Solomon emerges as the Overlord to finish Ricki off. But Bernard takes the deathblow meant for her, giving Ricki the chance to disarm Solomon, literally, and expel the Overlord from him.
