Swept Away
Swept away when her wagon train attempts a difficult river crossing, Ruthy MacNeil isn't all that upset at being separated from the family who raised her. All they've ever done is work her to the bone. She prayed for a chance to get away, and then came the raging flood. Alive but disoriented, she's rescued by Luke Stone...so unfortunately, there are more chances to die in her immediate future. Luke is heading home to reclaim the ranch stolen from his family. But the men who killed his father are working hard to ensure Luke doesn't make it alive. He has no choice but to keep moving. Still, he can't just abandon Ruthy, so she'll have to come along. His friends--a ragtag group of former Civil War soldiers--take a fast interest in the pretty gal. Luke thinks that's rather rude--he's the one who found her. And the more time he spends around the hard-working young woman who is a mighty good cook, the more he finds himself thinking beyond revenge and toward a different future. For the first time in a long time, Luke is tempted to turn from his destructive path and be swept away by love.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Best-selling author Connealy (Lassoed in Texas, Montana Marriages series) has made a name writing madcap romantic Westerns, and this new series, Trouble in Texas, will add to her list of successes if the first installment is any indication. Floodwaters sweep Ruthy MacNeil far downstream and into the life of Lucas Stone, a man on a mission to reclaim his stolen ranch near Broken Wheel, Tex. Luke—with help from his friends, all Regulators (men who kept order at Andersonville Prison during the Civil War)—wants to take back his family’s S Bar S Ranch from Flint Greer, a bully who beats his wife and doesn’t mind killing. Luke and his friends proceed with their plan, which includes rescuing Greer’s wife and taking Greer and his men into custody. But Luke’s strategy doesn’t play out as planned, either with reclaiming his ranch or with steeling his heart against the hard-working and beautiful Ruthy. Connealy’s style is fast-paced and spritely and sure to keep drawing fans. Agent: Nathasha Kern, the Natasha Kern Literary Agency. (Mar.)

Library Journal

Life hasn't been easy for Ruthy MacNeill. When the wagon train that her family joined tries to cross a wild river, she's swept away and rescued by Luke Stone. Ruthy had prayed for a change, and Luke's journey to reclaim his family's ranch seems like a great adventure. Along the way, Luke's friends take an interest in Ruthy, which doesn't sit too well with Luke, who is also beginning to take a shine to her. VERDICT Carol Award-winner Connealy ("The Kincaid Brides" series) has created a strong, independent heroine who meets her match in Luke, the strong, silent type. They clash at first before finding solace in each other, which makes for humorous moments that will please readers who enjoy romantic comedies with a Western flavor.
