"I won't keep you long," he began, "I know that Mr. Sutter has a busy day planned. It is the Lord's day of rest and maybe you should think about that, sir," he warned Dan.
"Maybe when God comes down on Saturday and works the field for me, then I can rest on Sunday," Dan said defensively.
"He's just kidding," Clara piped in, digging her nails into her husband's arm again.
"Well, what I wanted to talk to you about was your big home out there on Creek Road. Would you consider taking in some of the County kids? You know, the unfortunate ones with nowhere to go, no one to care for them," he explained.
"No! Let's go," Dan told his wife.
"They will pay you, and the kids could help you on the farm," the preacher added.
So that's how it all began. Sutter's Home for Children was open for business
