Overview

Earl Greyhound's 2010 sophomore effort, Suspicious Package, features more of the '70s hard rock and psychedelic stoner rock that garnered the band much attention on its 2007 debut, Soft Targets. Although just a power trio featuring lead vocalist/guitarist Matt Whyte, bassist/vocalist Kamara Thomas, and drummer Christopher Bear, Earl Greyhound make fuzzed-out, pounding, big-melody rock & roll that revels in its backward-looking boot-cut swagger. In that sense, the band brings to mind the similarly minded vintage approach of such contemporaries as Lenny Kravitz and the Black Crowes. Adding to the old-school vibe is the two-part opening "The Eyes of Cassandra," with its Latin jazz-inflected organ intro that morphs into a spacy and expansive prog rock anthem. Elsewhere, the band delivers some seriously dirty Led Zeppelin-esque moments on tracks like "Oye Vaya" and the angular but no less driving "Sea of Japan." ~ Matt Collar
