Eight-year-old Susie Gardner’s Granny Ella comes to visit and help her granddaughter celebrate her birthday. Granny Ella brings Susie a very special birthday present … glittery, sequined red shoes that have magical powers. They allow Susie to travel back in time to learn important life lessons that will make it possible for this socially conscious young girl to solve present-day social problems. As you travel along with Susie, you will meet inspirational women who have helped shape our country’s destiny. On your journey, you will fly in a 1948 airplane to a foreign country, visit a real palace, and free yourself from kidnappers who are trying to disrupt a meeting of the United Nations. At every turn, adventure, mystery, and a yummy chocolate cake await you.

About the Author

Sue Madway Levine has been working with children, families, and schools for more than 40 years. As a Speech and Language Therapist, a Learning Disabilities Resource Teacher, a college professor, researcher, and published author, Sue has dedicated her professional life to making a positive difference in the field of education.
During her work at Dominican University in San Rafael, CA, Dr. Levine hosted game-making workshops for local teachers. This led to her working in the toy and game industry, inventing new products for companies such as Parker Brothers, Milton Bradley, Hasbro, Mattel, Pressman Toy Company, Tiger Electronics, and The Great American Puzzle Factory. After having two of her textbooks published by Academic Therapy Publishing, Sue has now turned to writing children’s literature.
Presently, Sue is in private practice as the Director of Educational Services for The Child and Family Study Team and serves on the Advisory Board of The Academy In Manayunk, a division of The Lab School of Washington, D.C. She has been a member of The Council for Exceptional Children for many years and consults to school districts throughout the mid-Atlantic states. Sue lives in a suburb of Philadelphia, PA, with her husband, a Service Learning Coordinator at a local school district and spends her free time gardening, making Sailor’s Valentines, and traveling.
