This book, written by a father-and-son combination, offers both an adult's and a child's perspective on the positives and negatives that kids face during their early baseball playing years. Edgerton (Finding Your Voice) is a full-time writer, while son Mike is a 13-year-old youth baseball player. Together, they describe several types of coaches (e.g., "expert," "manager-dad," and "rule book coach"), teammates (e.g., "coach's son," "alibi-artist," and "kiss-up"), and parents (e.g., "critic" and "commentator") that may be found in the youth baseball world. Their folksy style of writing (e.g., "the next type of coach up to bat is this dude"; "beddy-bye nightmares") and often cynical approach to youth baseball ultimately detracts from the quality of this book. Instead of putting the reader at ease, too often the smart-alecky, juvenile tone comes across as, well, juvenile and unhelpful.
