About the Author

Louise McNaught completed her Fine Art Degree BSc in 2012 at the University of Greenwich, and she has continued to work as a professional artist ever since. Her artwork has been featured in art fairs in Milan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Stockholm, Brussels, and all over the United Kingdom.

Anna Claybourne is a freelance children's writer and editor based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Gr 3–5-Claybourne highlights 20 animals on the brink of extinction. The author worked in collaboration with Tusk Trust, a British charity created to aid conservation efforts in Africa. From the Asian elephant to bumblebees, the book showcases a wide range of featured creatures. McNaught's amazing animal portraits emphasize the severity of the possibility of their extinction. The animals are depicted among backdrops of solid colors with paint streaks somewhere throughout the animal. Explanations about conservation and levels of endangerment set up the rest of the book with enough context to deepen the significance of the text. For each animal there is at least a page of information, including habitat, location, size, population, endangered status, and Latin name. This information is presented without a bibliography or citations. It ends with a few ways to help support conservation, including donating to Tusk. VERDICT With vibrant colors and facts about each animal species, this book will encourage awareness about conservation efforts. Twenty endangered species from around the world are highlighted in this picture book allied with the African wildlife charity Tusk.

Despite the spare title and black endpapers, it's not all doom and gloom in this large, square, gorgeously illustrated picture book. This effect is accomplished by matching McNaught's stunning illustrations with Claybourne's concise text—a combination that delivers both visual and textual information, leaving readers feeling knowledgeable and empowered. The book's appealing and effective design presents double-page spreads with a full-page illustration on the recto and text on the verso. The illustration shows a finely wrought portrait of the animal or insect emerging from a bright, solid-colored background even as areas of background color fill in as negative space within the portrait—a technique that brilliantly underscores the evanescence of the species. Upward drips of paint visually connect the animal/insect to the greater world at large. The verso presents a silhouette of the world with icons pegging the areas the species inhabits and concisely relates its Latin name, status, population, size, habitat, and location. Below, further paragraphs tell readers why the animal or insect has declined in population (always human activity). But hearteningly, each section ends with the conservation efforts now being undertaken. The final page, "How You Can Help," sets black text against a bright, visually optimistic yellow background and lists accessible activities readers can participate in to promote conservation.
