Description: Like its previous editions (last one published in 2008), this book uses a rapid fire question-and-answer format that is meant to aid third- and fourth-year medical students on their surgical clerkship.
Purpose: It is intended to serve as a concise collection of surgical facts that should be possessed by all medical students during and following their surgical clerkship. The surgical field is vast and the amount of information that students must glean from a surgical clerkship is immense, therefore a quick reference guide, such as this one, is a very helpful resource.
Audience: Individuals early in their surgical training, primarily medical students and junior residents, are the intended audience. The content and the manner in which it is presented are appropriate for students with little previous exposure to the field of surgery.
Features: This book covers a broad spectrum of surgical topics in three sections. The first section focuses on basic surgical information, ranging from surgical terminology and simple procedures to postoperative management and surgical complications. Another section covers topics specific to general surgery presented by organ, and the third section discusses topics related to surgical specialties. The early chapters serve as a helpful orientation for students to the world of surgery. Beginning a surgical rotation can be intimidating for students who are unfamiliar to surgical practice. Therefore, the early chapters covering basic surgical terminology, OR procedures, and surgical instruments are particularly useful. The organization of the bulk of the book by organ/organ system helps students easily find and reference procedures and topics that are of interest or that they see on rounds or in the operating room. The book employs a rapid-fire, question-and-answer format. This is a concise and easy means of presenting information to students. It not only allows students the ability to cover a lot of information quickly but the format is perfectly suited for self-testing. Discussion of the relevant anatomy and the pictures that accompany descriptions of procedures help students develop a better understanding of what they will see in the operating room and why certain things are done.
Assessment: As a medical student, I found this book to be a very good resource for students on their surgical clerkship. Not only does it provide background information to help orient students to the surgical discipline but it also includes comprehensive information on the pathophysiology of diseases and their treatments and outcomes. This book is similar to others for medical students but its unique format allows students to access this information quickly and efficiently. Additionally, discussion of procedures and relevant anatomy prepares students to serve as active and engaged participants in the operating suite.
