Description: This new edition of Operative Surgery is more than an atlas of surgical procedures carried out on the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. The book presents a discussion of rationale and an explanation of indications for performing them. The scope of this volume has been narrowed while the number and variety of procedures has been expanded.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide instruction in modern surgical techniques, described in a logical, step-wise manner. The authors, many of whom are from outside the United States, explain their personal methods of performing procedures, some of which they devised themselves. The reader feels as though he is being taught by the expert in the field.
Audience: Residents in training in general or thoracic surgery, as well as practitioners in the community, can obtain current methods for undertaking surgical procedures performed for specific diseases and conditions encountered in the upper gastrointestinal tract.
Features: The volume is full of an expanded number of detailed illustrations depicting routine steps as well as highlighting ways of avoiding trouble. Many techniques using stapling devices are shown throughout, but hand suturing is still fully included. The new section on laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures is complete, considering the fast pace at which these areas are expanding. References are current and pertinent but tend to be few in number.
Assessment: On the whole, this volume is a useful instructional reference for residents and fellows and can be used to refresh practitioners prior to performing procedures they undertake infrequently. It is a comprehensive compilation of state-of-the-art endoscopic, laparoscopic, thoracoscopic, and open procedures carried out on the upper gastrointestinal tract.
