Superflare: The Fortunate Ones

After the Earth suffers a natural catastrophe that has brought with it EMP-like devastation, Colton Rayner's family must fight to survive in an unfamiliar world. All modern means of communication have been lost and times are hard; there's no electricity, stores have been looted and abandoned, gas pumps don't work, and there's no way to buy food or call for medical help. The family finds they must rely on horses, wagons, and their own ingenuity and will to live.

The patriarch of this farm family, Harold Engquist, had tried to prepare his loved ones in advance with the skills and the provisions needed to endure hard times, but did he do enough? Will his food stores attract desperate people who are in search of food and clean water, or worse yet, the unwanted attention of the degenerate Claggit family?

Meanwhile, Abby, a lovely stranded stranger, unloads her two horses and leaves her truck and trailer on the highway to go in search of help. She happens upon the family's farm, which soon pits Colt and his cousin Tyler against each other as they vie for her attention.

This survival fiction / contemporary western / romance novel is sure to pull you in when you join this family as they try to adapt and look to the future.

About the Author

Lisa Poché Calhoun is the author of the exciting survival fiction novel, "Superflare: The Fortunate Ones." Prior to writing the book, Lisa worked in front of the camera in the film industry. Attracted by life behind the scenes, she became a location scout and worked on productions from commercials to feature films, including "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, 1 and 2." She worked her way up and by the time an injury sidelined her, she had been the Location Manager on feature films. Between movies she had intermittently written for newspapers and magazines and realized she now had the spare time a novel demanded. Thanks to the success of the novel and requests from her readers, she plans to write a sequel in the near future.

Her thirst for knowledge keeps her reading and researching subjects that interest her. As her understanding of the subjects covered in "Superflare: The Fortunate Ones" grew, she felt compelled to write the book. She chose "survival fiction" as her genre and wrote in a style that submerges her readers into the story. She lets the characters tell the readers what's happening and about themselves.

Lisa and her husband John make their home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and enjoy time spent with their family, their cat and dog. They have two retired show horses she calls her "pasture ornaments." They live in the city, but she grew up on a sugarcane farm and often points out that she's a country girl at heart.

Table of Contents

Superflare: The Fortunate Ones is a survival fiction novel that crosses over into other genres such as contemporary western, romance, action and adventure, and rural life. Set in northeast Louisiana, in the southern United States, it’s a refreshing and realistic read with outstanding character development.

The novel is a charming and gritty story of survival, love and life after the Earth is struck by a catastrophic superflare. The electromagnetic pulse (EMP) destroys the power grid, motors and electronics on a wide scale. No one knows when life will return to normal. The characters find themselves without modern conveniences in a seemingly different world than anything they had known before. They’re aware their ancestors had prospered before technology, but they lack the knowledge, skills and much of the equipment needed to do the same.

The story focuses on Colt Rayner, his family and his first cousin, Tyler Engquist, until a lovely stranger rides up on horseback. Abigale St. James, who had been passing through the area when the EMP made both her truck and cell phone inoperable, had only one good option – to unload her two horses and ride for help. It was a wise move, especially when she ends up in the safety of this family and falls in love with one of the young men competing for her attention.

Lisa Poché Calhoun doesn’t make her readers wait for events in this book. The superflare hits in the first chapter and Abby and her chosen beau become a couple and forge ahead together long before the end. Don’t assume this leads to a lackluster ending; it doesn’t! There’s another intriguing romance that has been brewing that will easily hold your attention. There’s also trouble with some less fortunate people who don’t have a prepper in their midst, as this family does. The characters have to press on while they defend themselves and their stored goods. The story is well-resolved and the ending is satisfying. It’s a thrilling read that will grab you and pull you in.

This story is great for young adults and older readers alike. It’s believable, while not being profane, and educational, although thoroughly masked as an entertaining novel. This book has broad appeal and is attracting attention from survivalists, preppers, those interested in farm and ranch life, horses, cattle, life after an EMP, and those who enjoy action adventure and survival stories, amongst others. The reviews on this book are phenomenal and the author has had many requests for a sequel.
