Presenting key cultural artifacts of the time, Summer of Love introduces and explores the events and experiences that today define this dynamic era.

About the Author

Jill D’Alessandro is curator of the Caroline and H. McCoy Jones Department of Textile Arts at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. She is the author of Pulp Fashion: The Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave and contributed to Lines on the Horizon: Native American Art from the Weisel Family Collection.
 
Colleen Terry is assistant curator of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. She is the author of Artful Animals and a contributor to Jewel City: Art from San Francisco’s Panama-Pacific International Exposition and Ed Ruscha and the Great American West.

Conceived by the curators of costume and textiles (D'Alessandro) and graphic arts (Terry), this exhibition at San Francisco's de Young museum and accompanying catalog also include photography, avant-garde film, and other multisensory experiential arts. The beautifully illustrated and very readable work provides the social, cultural, and political background that laid the era's foundation. Some may think of the 1960s as part of their youth, yet this book treats these years as a serious historical period, the legacy of which affects us today. Use of LSD prompted sensitivities to pollution, synthetics, and food additives that opened the door for natural foods and the green movement. Readers who wore bell bottoms and crocheted vests may most appreciate the mesmerizing photographs and history of the designs and designers who made carefully considered statements with their creations. In addition to the 1967 map of San Francisco are a time line and checklist of information on the featured artists. Unfortunately, this reviewer found the binding not sturdy enough to contain this stunning but weighty tome.
