About the Author

Laura N. Gitlin, PhD, FGSA, FAAN, is distinguished professor and dean, College of Nursing and Health Professions at Drexel University. She is also an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.

Ann Kolanowski, PhD, RN, FGSA, FAAN, is professor of nursing at the College of Nursing and professor of psychiatry at the College of Medicine, Penn State University.

Kevin J. Lyons, PhD, has over 40 years of experience in higher education as a faculty member and administrator. Dr. Lyons is one of the founding members of the American Interprofessional Health Collaborative. He has also served on the Board of Trustees for Rocky Mountain University of the Health Professions.

Description: This fourth edition of a guide to writing successful grants for health and human service professionals includes additional information related to decreased funding and electronic submissions.
Purpose: The purpose is to highlight that changes that have occurred in grant writing since the previous edition in 2008.
Audience: The authors intend this book for health and human services professionals who desire to seek grant funding, but it also would be useful to doctoral students who are seeking grants. The authors are faculty members who are well-funded researchers in their disciplines.
Features: This book is divided into seven parts, with several chapters in each part. It covers all the steps from getting started to strategies for managing a grant award. One part that is especially useful is preparing a budget, which is particularly helpful to individuals who do not routinely work with budgets. Each chapter starts with objectives and ends with a summary. Boxes highlight useful information throughout the chapters. Appendixes enhance the book, with such resources as a sample timeline, budget sheets, and flow charts.
Assessment: This book is easy to read and understand. It is a great resource for individuals wishing to write grants. I have not seen another book that is this comprehensive and user-friendly.
