About the Author

Kathy J. Morrison, MSN, RN, SCRN, FAHA is a certified stroke nurse, a Fellow of the American Heart Association, and a recipient of the prestigious Pennsylvania State Nightingale Award for Clinical Nursing Excellence. As the stroke program manager for the Penn State Hershey Medical Center, she oversaw all aspects of stroke care, from prehospital through stroke clinic follow-up until her retirement in 2021. She played a pivotal role in Penn State Hershey Medical Center's attainment of The Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Center certification and has mentored many stroke program coordinators through the process of attaining Primary and Comprehensive Stroke Center certification. Ms. Morrison also served on The Joint Commission Expert Panel for Stroke Center certification standards.

Ms. Morrison's published works have appeared in nursing journals and neuroscience course curricula. Her books Fast Facts for Stroke Care Nursing 1st & 2nd editions, Stroke Certification Study Guide for Nurses and Stroke Nursing Certification Review have been well received in the nursing community, both as handy guides for stroke care nurses and as preparation tools for the SCRN® certification exam. Even in retirement, she remains active in leading SCRN® review courses, participating in community stroke awareness campaigns and facilitating a regional stroke survivor support group. She established the Stroke Coordinators of Pennsylvania (SCoPA) in 2010--a group of stroke coordinators whose collaborative work has resulted in significant improvements in stroke care and outcomes in community hospitals across central Pennsylvania. She is a Fellow of the American Heart Association, a member of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, a board member of the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses and a board member of the Stroke Survivors Foundation.

Description: This study guide for the Stroke Care Registered Nurse (SCRN) examination describes the exam and provides practice questions and answers with rationales as well as case studies. An accompanying website presents an online version of the print book.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive study guide for those preparing to take the American Board of Neuroscience Nursing's SCRN certification exam. Presenting the book in print and online format will appeal to different populations and allow nurses to access information in the way that they prefer.
Audience: The intended audience is registered nurses studying for the SCRN exam. However, the book also can be used as a reference for all the personnel on a stroke unit to enhance their knowledge. The book meets the needs of the intended audience, and the author also notes that it can be used for a unit to prepare for and obtain stroke center certification. It also could be used for in-service learning or a question of the day type activity to enhance the quality of care for stroke patients day in and day out. The author and the contributing author are both certified and working in the specialty.
Features: The book starts with the background of stroke care and how it has been organized, and then discusses the particulars of the SCRN exam. Then it approaches the subject from bottom up, starting with anatomy and physiology, prehospital and emergency room care, and diagnostics. Acute care is followed by medications and postacute care. The next chapter covers stroke center certification and regulations, and the last chapter presents case studies. Each chapter is written in question format, covering the heart of the content followed by the application of concepts in the case studies. The content is easily covered in practice questions with rationales for the correct answer. Rounding out the book are the National Stroke Guidelines, a list of medications with trade and generic names, and a neuroscience glossary.
Assessment: It is nice to have this book available both in print and online to accommodate readers' preferences. The one feature I like about the online version is the interactive nature of the practice questions and the ability to mark questions you want to review. The other advantage of the online version is the practice test, which can be reset to use more than once. I do not know of another study guide resource for this particular exam. The author alludes to her previous book, Fast Facts for Stroke Care Nursing: An Expert Guide in a Nutshell (Springer Publishing Company, 2014), which may contain content to review before jumping into the practice exam format.
