Overview

Lieutenant Eve Dallas explores the hidden connections among friends and lovers, enemies and strangers in this thriller in the #1 New York Times bestselling In Death series.

In 2060 New York, some murders still get more attention than others, especially those in which the victim is a prominent businessman, found in his Park Avenue apartment, tied to the bed-and strangled-with cords of black velvet. Fortunately, homicide cop Lt. Eve Dallas's billionaire husband Roarke happens to own the prime real estate where Thomas Anders's sporting-goods firm was headquartered, giving her some help with access. Before long, she's knocking on doors-or barging through them-to look for the answers she needs.

But some things don't add up-and everyone's alibi checks out, from the wife who was off in the tropics to the nephew who stood to inherit millions. Was this a crime of passion-or a carefully planned execution? It's up to Dallas to solve a sensational case in which those who seem to be intimates sometimes guard secrets from each other-and strangers may be connected in unexpected, and deadly, ways...

Editorial Reviews

Thomas Anders's murder was a tabloid monger's dream. When the billionaire mogul is found dead, tied to his bed with black velvet cords, the messy Park Avenue strangling becomes the tawdry talk of the town. For Anders's tight-lipped associates, however, this kinky crime is best left unsolved -- and undiscussed. To loosen tongues, Lieutenant Eve Dallas needs superhuman persistence and occasionally the help of her well-heeled husband, Roarke. What emerges will surprise even devoted fans of Nora Roberts/J. D. Robb's In Death series.

Publishers Weekly

In bestseller Robb's slick 26th not-so-near-future crime thriller to feature Lt. Eve Dallas (after 2007's Creation in Death), the New York City homicide cop investigates the murder of business tycoon Thomas Anders, whose strangled body is discovered tied to his bed, apparently the victim of a kinky sex encounter gone bad. Aided by her mysterious husband, Roarke, and long-time sidekick Det. Delia Peabody, Eve doggedly questions Anders's widow, Ava, and his nephew, Benedict Forrest, number two at the victim's corporation, Anders Worldwide. Both Ava and Benedict have alibis that put them far from the crime scene at the time of Anders's death. While the guilty party soon becomes obvious and the gimmick used by the culprit clear to anyone familiar with Strangers on a Train, Robb's strong, hard-nosed heroine once again generates the kind of heat that keeps fans turning the pages. Robb’s strong, hard-nosed heroine once again generates the kind of heat that keeps fans turning the pages.”—Publishers Weekly

“Settle back for another eminently entertaining chapter in this first-rate and long-running detective series. Early on strong-willed Lt. Eve Dallas pegs her suspect, but what follows is a thriller that also becomes a personal battle of wills. Robb has created a cunning killer who uses money and a sympathetic façade to divert suspicion. But, as many a killer can attest, never bet against Eve Dallas!”—RT Book Reviews

JUN/JUL 08 - AudioFile

This fast-paced installment of the Eve and Roarke series, which takes place in 2060, is concisely narrated with verve and humor by Susan Ericksen. Her reading integrates the mystery of philanthropist Thomas Anders’s scandalous death with Lieutenant Eve Dallas’s hot relationship with her Irish billionaire husband, Roarke. Eve’s sidekick, Detective Delia Peabody, is a character of warmth and humor—in contrast to Dallas’s hard-nosed, aggressive style. Ericksen portrays these various characters with unique voices that are compatible with their personalities. Her Irish accent for Roarke is uncannily believable as is the voice of a character who is suffering from a terrible cold. The production is engaging, and Ericksen’s verbal nuances add drama to the novel. S.C.A. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine
