Getting settled in a new city is never easy, especially when you're a teenager, and especially when you've recently hopped a bus away from an abusive family. It doesn't make it any easier when you've made a pact to learn magic from an invisible creature only you can see and hear, but right now you just need a place to stay, and a job to let you keep staying there. Preferably one that will pay under the table and not ask too many questions about how school is going.
But after a day in Rivernest, Alex has at least the place to stay covered, even if it's not exactly a classy joint. Unfortunately, finding a job is made a lot harder when an unknown gunman tries to kill him his first night in town. Soon enough, Alex and his invisible comrade Arkanis are pulled into the middle of an unseen civil war between the city's old and new rulers. Unsure about who to trust on either side, the duo find themselves inching closer and closer to a grisly demise unless they can figure out who to side with.
